FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Campbells Muscat ‘perfect’
Campbells Wines are toasting their success today with the announcement that their Merchant Prince Rare Rutherglen Muscat has received a perfect score of 100 points from respected wine magazine Wine Spectator. This is the first time in the history of the magazine than an Australian wine has been awarded a perfect score, from more than 11,000 Australian wines reviewed.
Wine Spectator is the most widely read wine magazine in the world with a readership of more than 2.5 million. Legendary wine columnist Harvey Steiman commented on the wine, ‘Dark amber in colour, this is complex and wonderful with exquisite balance, richness, depth and length, finishing on a note of amazing finesse and delicacy’.
Owner and winemaker Colin Campbell was understandably pleased with the result. ‘We have received a lot of accolades for this wine in the past, but this is the first time we have been awarded 100 points. To get a perfect score from such a respected wine reviewer is a great endorsement’.
The wine represents the pinnacle of Campbells production at Rutherglen, drawn from ancient soleras laid down by Campbells generations past. Colin commented, ‘It is really my grandfather and father who take the credit for this wine, as they are the generations that made the base wine. It’s due to their foresight that I am fortunate enough to have these incredibly old and special stocks of Muscat to work with today.’
The review is likely to stimulate great interest globally for the family winery. Said Colin ‘The export market has been tough in recent times. These results will certainly create a stir in these markets, particularly in America, and we should see an increase in demand for our wines’.
Being chairman of the Muscat of Rutherglen network the significance of the review is not lost on Colin. ‘We are only a small region, but the impact we have on the world stage as a collective is really quite profound’.
STICKS WINS TROPHY FOR ‘BEST RED TABLE WINE’ at the 2010 SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL WINE COMPETITION
Sticks Yarra Valley has received further national acclaim for its recently released Sticks No.29 range.
Sticks won the Blue-Gold Award for ‘BEST FULLER BODIED DRY RED TABLE WINE’ before taking out the overall TROPHY for BEST RED TABLE WINE at the prestigious Sydney International Wine Competition with the 2008 Sticks No.29 Shiraz from Strathbogie Ranges. This outstanding award further reinforces Sticks brand strategy of showcasing the very best of each vintage via the Sticks No.29 range.
“We are extremely proud to win such a prestigious Trophy for the 2008 No.29 Shiraz in one of the world’s leading wine shows, which matches wine with food throughout the judging process.” commented Rebecca Farrow, Sales and Marketing Manager for Sticks Yarra Valley. “Having launched the Sticks No.29 range only twelve months ago, it is our third Trophy, which celebrates our focus and commitment to sourcing premium quality fruit, and combining it with the winemaking ability of Travis Bush and the team at Sticks.”
With only 800 six packs of the 2008 No.29 Shiraz bottled in mid 2009, this wine is set to be released to the market in August 2010, with approximately 12 months bottle age.
Sticks wines are currently distributed nationally via ‘red+white’ and are exported to key markets around the world, including New Zealand, Singapore, China, Canada, USA, and UK.

Cabernet takes the Crown at Royal Sydney Wine Show
The newly released 2008 Blue Pyrenees Cabernet Sauvignon (RRP $18) will tonight collect the Trophy for the Best Dry Red Wine in the highly regarded Macquarie Group Sydney Royal Wine Show 2010.
This most prestigious wine competition in Australia which was founded in 1822, now attracts more than 2300 entries and is typically dominated by some of the industry’s biggest names. The Perpetual Trophy awarded to the Best Dry Red Wine in the Commercial Classes (Classes 9 to 14) is one of the shows most esteemed awards and is sponsored by the Wine Communicators of Australia. The trophy will be presented to Blue Pyrenees at tonight’s presentation dinner hosted by Macquarie Bank.
Resulting from an exceptional vintage, the 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon is possibly Blue Pyrenees’s best varietal Cabernet produced in its long history. Although 2008 was a growing season of contrasts across the continent, the Pyrenees had one of their best vintages in years. Fortunately this cool climate region was less affected by the heatwave experienced in many regions, and across the range 2008 was outstanding for Blue Pyrenees.
In 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon made up 14% of the total Australian wine grape crush, up 40% on the previous vintage, and third in predominance to Chardonnay (24.3%) and Shiraz (23.8%). However at Blue Pyrenees approximately 20% (approx 30 hectares) of the Estate is currently planted to premium quality Cabernet Sauvignon as it’s a variety that thrives in the Estates cool climate.
Having taken a small pinch of French eccentricity from its founders Remy Martin (established in 1963), Blue Pyrenees now under private ownership, has become well known for the Cabernet predominant Bordeaux-styled blend for their flagship wine Blue Pyrenees Estate Red (RRP $35).
“I have been convinced since I have been with Blue Pyrenees that Cabernet is our most consistent high quality performer in both the vineyard and as a wine. This is why our “reserve” Estate Red is Cabernet predominant. I also believe that very few viticultural areas in Australia can claim to do Cabernet as well as the Pyrenees and that we should hang our hat on this variety. I guess this trophy for our entry level Cabernet is proof of this.” says Blue Pyrenees Chief Winemaker, Andrew Koerner of the win.
Winesave; Tim White rates three wine preservers on the market - winesave comes out as the best value.
“It was a question I’d not really expected about my little wine preservation trial into how the New Inventors-winning Wine Preserva’s Wine shield compared with a couple of argon gas cover solutions; winesave and Winekeep.
It went: “So you really have bottles of half-empty wine left over at the end of the day?” Well actually no - rarely - was my reply, except after tastings. But there are solutions out there that claim to help you keep unfinished bottles of wine in good condition.
The first is Wine Shield (www.winepreserva.com), a synthetic, flexible disc which floats on the surface of the wine once put into the bottle with the aid of the applicator that comes with each pack of eight ($8). Each disc is used only once.
The second option is winesave (www.winesave.net.au), a $29.95 canister containing the odourless gas argon. You spray the gas into the bottle.
Finally there’s Winekeep (www.grapeworks.com.au) another argon-filled canister - only this one, at $240, is a more serious James Bond-looking gadget that is lockable and industrial-looking.The idea with both is that argon, heavier than air, floats over the surface of the wine preventing oxygen from touching the surface.
I sampled identical high-quality wines made by my winemaker girlfriend: the white, a riesling: the red, a shiraz grenache blend. Two hundred millilitres were drawn from four bottles of each. In each set one was a control, the others were “preserved”.
After 48 hours I retasted these wines in random “blind” sets and samples from freshly opened bottles. The white wines looked especially fresh from all three protected types. The two-day opened reds all showed slight signs of oxidation, especially texturally on the palate. All products did a reasonable job when the wines were tasted after two days, but after that I would put money on seeing oxidative characters.
Once the first glass of wine is poured from a bottle you have already drawn a significant amount of oxygen into the wine.”

VIBES+VINES Party!!
red+white said thank you and Merry Christmas in style this year by hosting a rockin party in iconic Gershwin Room, the Espy, Tuesday 24th November 09.
Our guests enjoyed the sounds from bands ‘Deep Street Soul’ & 'Spoonful', and DJ Dave Wailes on decks. There was plenty of funk and soul; rock and retro all rolled into one fun evening.
Entry was by donation and monies raised totaled $618 for HEAT (Hospitality Employment & Training); a not for profit organization aimed at training and employment in the hospitality industry for under privileged kids.
The event was a great success, with +200 customers coming along, the atmosphere of the Gershwin Room was remarkable and the most important thing was that it was something the industry had not seen before, unique and a great way of saying thank you and Merry Xmas.CATALINA SOUNDS WINS Champion Sauvignon Blanc Trophy

NEW PACKAGING FOR TAHBILK MARKS THE BEGINNING OF THE NEXT 150 YEARS OF WINEMAKING
MEDIA RELEASE – For Immediate Release
September 2009
To celebrate its 150th year in 2010, Tahbilk Wines, from the Nagambie Lakes region of Central Victoria, is delighted to unveil new packaging for its core range of wines: Marsanne, Riesling, Viognier, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
When searching for inspiration for the new packaging, the team at Tahbilk delved into the archives. It was Eric Stevens Purbrick, grandfather of current winemaker and CEO Alister, who provided the key to the past which would unlock the future. At the winemaking helm at Tahbilk for over 40 years, Eric pioneered varietal labelling in Australia, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. Inspired by his original 1932 label, today’s new livery is a modern twist on Eric’s early vision for the brand.
The new label celebrates the heritage and provenance of Tahbilk and captures the essence of the brand. The classic elements remain: the strong logo presence and the iconic image of the Tahbilk ‘man at his desk’ who is clearly enjoying a glass of fine wine.
After studying in the UK, Eric travelled through Europe. It was during his stay in Germany’s Black Forest in 1928 that he became intrigued by a charming wrought iron sign, circa 1732, hanging outside a local weinhaus. So taken by its quirky yet welcoming feel, on return to Australia, Eric commissioned a replica of the sign and ‘he’ has been hanging above the historic cellar door entrance at Tahbilk for over 80 years.
Although present on the Tahbilk labels since 1932, this new packaging sees our ubiquitous friend take centre stage and also brings the labelling in line with the flagship range of wines: 1860 Vines Shiraz; 1927 Vines Marsanne; Eric Stevens Purbrick Shiraz & Eric Stevens Purbrick Cabernet Sauvignon. With a strong ‘family’ look and connection, the new packaging has a timeless quality which respects the importance of preserving Tahbilk’s unique heritage, but with an equal respect for the exciting future ahead.
With 150 years of unique history in the Australian, and indeed the world’s, wine industry to celebrate, 2010 sees the Purbrick family undertaking a year long global promotion of events, sales initiatives and family visits to mark this auspicious occasion. It will also set the scene for the next generation of Purbricks at the helm of Tahbilk with Alister’s daughter Hayley joining the family business this year.
Rare in all senses, this is an exciting once in a lifetime experience.
Tahbilk CEO and fourth generation winemaker, Alister Purbrick said, “It was a big move for us to radically change our packaging and I hasten to add that it was not a decision that was taken lightly. In fact, work began on this project over 2 years ago, as we felt that the 150th anniversary was the perfect time to celebrate the past, further link our entire range with a strong family look and embrace the future. The family is honoured and proud to be the custodian of Tahbilk’s rich heritage and our celebrations for 2010 will be recognition of the unique place this winery holds in the world of wine. Tahbilk is, indeed, “a priceless inheritance”.”

Plantagenet; Durham proud of his first range of reds from a tough season
After 25 vintages, winemaker John Durham still enjoys a challenge and he certainly ‘enjoyed’ one during the 2007 vintage Plantagenet Wines. The 2007 vintage turned out to be the shortest vintage in Great Southern history. Vintage generally lasts 10-12 weeks, 2007 was a mere 6! As John frantically juggled tanks, barrels and crushers, the grapes kept coming. And of course this is where the experience of 25 vintages shone through. After 6 weeks John emerged reassured it was a good move when he found the Great Southern region can produce outstanding wines even under challenging conditions.
The decision to leave Cape Mentelle and join Plantagenet wines was an easy one for John. Experience new challenges in an unfamiliar region with an reputable company with a long history, getting hands on again and extending his understanding with more unfamiliar varieties like Riesling.
Of course the fact that Plantagenet pioneered The Great Southern; is in the top 10 of Western Australian wines for quality and consistency over time; and is owned by the oldest family-run business in Western Australia that believes providing quality is a good business strategy considerably helped in making the move.
John’s vision for Plantagenet
Making wines that people enjoy drinking……..
Shiraz, Cabernet and Riesling have long been the stand out varieties of the Great Southern, so continue to reinforce that reputation with producing wines worthy of the name Plantagenet and the Great Southern region.

Australia ’s First Families of Wine initiative was officially launched on Monday evening at the Sydney Opera House.
Of the initial 12 wineries/families involved, Campbells and Tahbilk from the red+white portfolio have been very instrumental in ensuring that this group of key wine brands have a voice within the domestic and overseas markets.
Please see below some quotes below from the Campbell ’s on what this initiative means to them.
“In a family wine business such as Campbells , all generations have had their challenges. This is now our challenge, to join with a group of some of Australia ’s most respected multi generational family winemakers to take the heart and soul of Australian wine to the world”.
“As pioneers of fine wine in the Rutherglen region, we at Campbells have a deep rooted commitment to the Australian Wine Industry and are pleased to join the other members of Australia’s First Families of Wine to take the message of the heart and soul of Australian wine to the world”.

New kid on the block at Dalwhinnie
It looks like another of our reputable vineyards are investing in management and marketing of their brand, which is extremely positive for the brand and both of our businesses.
Dalwhinnie has recently employed Peter Bessey – an outline of his experience and his role with Dalwhinnie are below.
Peter Bessey
“I began in the wine business managing the Cellar Door and selling for Red Hill Estate upon immigrating to Australia in 1995. After RHE, I went on to be General Manager and Assistant Winemaker under the legendary Winemaker Ian Home at Massoni Wines. Four years on, and after a vintage in Italy , I joined the consulting firm Magnum Wine Solutions as an associate, working with large clients such as Fosters, Nepenthe & Cos d'Estournel.
Preferring the boutique end of the wine industry, I returned to work as Executive Winemaker and GM of Tuck’s Ridge where I have been for the past
5 years. I now join Dalwhinnie in a diversified role where I will be involved in all aspects of winemaking and business.
Our goals are to refine the already formidable wines and reputation of Dalwhinnie to make it truly one of Australia 's best and most sought after brands. Part of my role will be to spend the time and energy needed to truly service the people who can help us achieve our goal; this includes the Red & White team, key customers and critics.”

Put Victoria On Your Table
Victorian consumers will be urged to “buy Victorian”, with the launch of a campaign that encourages choice of:
• Victorian produce at fresh produce markets and other food retailers;
• Victorian wine in retail stores;
• Victorian food and wine from restaurant menus.
Led by Victoria’s peak food and wine organisations Melbourne Food and Wine (MFW) and Victorian Wine Industry Association (VWIA), the campaign aims to encourage consumption of and consumer loyalty to food and wine of Victorian provenance.
Sponsored by Regional Development Victoria, “Put Victoria on Your Table” is a statewide campaign that will in its launch year run from 26 July to 9 August 2009, supported by a website that will serve as an information hub.
Showcasing the state’s bounty across Melbourne and regional Victoria, winter food and wine activity will span organised events such as Cellar Door in Crown Palladium (Sunday 26 July) and The Age Good Food Guide Winter Restaurant Express (26 July – 9 August), to the promotion of Victorian wine in liquor outlets across the state, including tastings and linked advertising campaigns.
These activities will be further supported by point of sale presence across venues such as restaurants, wineries, gastropubs and markets. MFW and VWIA seek to collaborate with a range of other stakeholders – from food and/or wine industry associations to major cultural and sporting venues – in order to extend the campaign’s reach.

Decanter Magazine have just released their Power List 2009. This is a bi-annual list of the 50 people who “have the most influence in the wine world as to shaping what’s in your glass” and Michael Hill Smith comes in at number 38.
The only other Australian to make the list was Ian Johnston, CEO of the Fosters Group at 14. On the list were Richard Sands head of Constellation, Nicolas Sarkozy, Robert Parker, Jancis Robinson, Steven Spurrier, Joseph Gallo, Angelo Gaja, Pierro Antinori and other wine luminaries.
In addition to Shaw + Smith they acknowledge that Michael has enhanced the reputation of the Australian wine industry through his ambassadorial work, travelling the globe to educate drinkers. And in particular that Michael “will be a key player in Australia’s bid to pursue a more premium agenda”.

Australian wine industry calls for government help
Australian wine industry bodies are to call on the Federal Government for funding to help people leave the industry. Wine Australia and other national associations, including the Winemakers' Federation of Australia, plan to make a joint appeal to the Government as early as July or August, asking for financial support to assist in reducing the size of the Australian wine trade. Paul Henry, market development manager for Wine Australia, told decanter.com, "The winemaking bodies are making a reform agenda that we will present to the Federal Government. We believe the industry needs to be a different size and shape if it is to move forward. But we need to downsize responsibly." The Australian wine industry does not receive funding from the Government currently but with problems of over-supply and continued drought in inland areas, Henry believes it is now time for the Government to intervene..read more
Press Release: Top West Aussie wines hit the international stage
The ‘Great Wine Estates of Western Australia’ have returned home this week after a series of highly successful wine events in Hong Kong and London throughout the month of May, where the finest wines from their cellars were showcased to media, buyers and wine collectors.
The 12 Great Wine Estates (Cape Mentelle, Cullen, Devil’s Lair, Howard Park, Houghton, Leeuwin Estate, Moss Wood, Pierro, Plantagenet, Vasse Felix, Voyager Estate, and Xanadu) together provided a compelling message to international wine enthusiasts that these wines, with their strongly articulated sense of place and first growth quality, represent real alternatives to highly priced Bordeaux and Burgundies.
The tastings were supported by Langton’s Fine Wine Exchange, and hosted by wine auctioneer and writer Andrew Caillard MW who commented that for buyers in the know, the wines from these Estates were more than just an alternative to Bordeaux, they were a preferred choice.
“These tastings present a unique opportunity for trade, media and wine collectors to see serious and beautiful wines from Australia with a voice of first growth quality and imprint of place.
The Great Wine Estates of Western Australia” together represent the leading force of fine wine in Western Australia, and it is exciting to see a group of wineries making such a significant impact on the world wine stage,” he said.
The tastings included a seminar for the UK’s most highly respected media influencers, the Circle of Wine Writers, as well as a series of tastings at Hong Kong’s Grand Hyatt Hotel for wine collectors, sommeliers, trade and media.
The Great Wine Estates of Western Australia was established in 1996 as an initiative between Langton’s and David Hohnen, then CEO of Cape Mentelle. It is now well known by Australian wine collectors as a union of Western Australia’s top wine marques and is the only association of wineries in the world that is pulled together under the imprimatur of an internationally recognised and respected third party (Langton’s).

Press Relase: Tahbilk Marsanne receives fine accolades
At the inaugural Landmark Australia Tutorial, an international initiative undertaken by Wine Australia and currently taking place in South Australia ’s Barossa Valley , Victoria ’s Tahbilk Marsanne, from the Nagambie Lakes , has received some fine accolades.
Reporting on Jancis Robinson’s wine lover’s website, www.jancisrobinson.com, attendee Julia Harding MW noted:
“Landmark Australia – Day 3 - Last night’s dinner was another opportunity to taste wines that couldn’t be squeezed into the day’s tastings…..To me the most remarkable wines were the Tahbilk Marsannes – such a good wine at such a great price, which is probably why I made the 2005 a previous wine of the week. Not only that but also a wine that develops well in bottle.”
The 1998, 2004 and 2008 vintages of Tahbilk Marsanne were served at the dinner, illustrating the development of this variety from a young, citrusy and fresh wine to an older, far more complex wine, rich with honeysuckle and nutty flavours.
The Landmark Australia Tutorial runs for five days from June 1, 2009 and marks the Australian wine industry’s most significant investment to date in telling Australia ’s fine wine story to an influential, opinion shaping audience.Twelve of the world’s most influential wine media and educators are being hosted by Wine Australia for five days before heading off on regional tours across South Australia , New South Wales , Tasmania , Western Australia and Tahbilk’s home state, Victoria .

20th vintage at Shaw + Smith
Hard to believe but 2009 is our 20th vintage at Shaw + Smith. In our first vintage we sourced grapes from Geoff Hardy’s Adelaide Hills and Greg Trott gave us some tank space at Wirra Wirra to make the wine. What an exciting 20 years it has been. We now have vineyards at both Woodside and Balhannah, a wonderful winery and tasting facility at the latter site and export to 17 countries.
Our goal has always been the same – to make exciting modern cool climate wines that rank amongst Australia ’s best. Sauvignon Blanc has been the back bone of the business but in recent years both our M3 Chardonnay and Shiraz are rated highly both domestically and internationally.
It will be fascinating to see what the next 20 years hold.
