Winemaker - Olivier Humbrecht
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht was created in 1959 by the union of the family owned properties of Zenon Humbrecht, winegrower at Gueberschwihr and of Emile Zind, winegrower in Wintzenheim, prior to which time both families had been producing and selling wines under their own name and label.
The Humbrecht family have been involved in winegrowing, passing from father to son, since the “Thirty Years War” in Europe in 1620. Today Leonard and Ginette who married in 1959, with their son Olivier and his wife Margaret, carry on the traditions of the Domaine.
Chanoine Barth, historian on the wines of Alsace, recalls that the Humbrecht family was already renting vineyards from the Abbaye of Marbach, near Guerberschwihr, in the 18th century. Domaine bottling only commended in 1947, and since that time the Humbrecht family have produced wine made only from grapes harvested from their own vineyards.
Today Domaine Zind-Humbrecht has 40 hectares of vineyards located in five different villages in the Haut-Rhin. Following many years of experience and research, Zind-Humbrecht have concluded that certain Alsace grape varieties achieve their best potential when planted in specific soil-types and micro-climates, and their vineyards reflect these conclusions:
· 5.5 ha in Thann, where the Grand Cru vineyard of Rangen Clos St Urbain is situated.
· 6.2 ha in Hunawihr, where the Zind-Humbrecht single vineyard of Clos Windsbuhl is situated.
· 2.4 ha in Gueberschwihr, where the Grand Cru vineyard Goldert is situated.
· 8.3 ha in Wintzenheim, where the Grand Cru vineyard Hengst is situated and the Zind-Humbrecht single vineyards of Clos Hauserer and Rotenberg are situated.
· 18.0 ha in Turckheim, where the Grand Cru vineyard Brand is situated and the Zind-Humbrecht single vineyards of Heimbourg, Clos Jebsal and Herrenweg are situated.
In September 1992, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht inaugurated new cellars and offices located in the Herrenweg vineyard, including one of the most technologically advanced wineries in the region. The total production of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht ranges between 10,000 and 18,000 cases of wine, with 75-85% being exported.
