Winemaker - Mike Peterkin

Pierro Vineyard, established in 1980, is located on the banks of the Willybrup Brook in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. Fifteen acres of grapevines are set in 65 acres of undulating bushland, with Willybrup Brook and Red Brook both running through the property. Owner and winemaker, Dr Michael Peterkin graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1972 with a medical degree. He then proceeded to attend the Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1976 and 1977 obtaining a degree in grape growing and winemaking.

When established in 1980 the design for the vineyard was novel, two and a half times as many vines per acre were planted compared with the conventional vineyard. The vines were situated closer together, the rows narrower, and drip irrigation was installed. An integrated system of soil, water and canopy management was developed to grow grapes that attain better quality than an Australian conventional vineyard. The climate at Willyabrup in the Margaret River district is ômaritimeö and in essence is a very moderate and consistent climate with few extremes of temperature throughout the year.

At Pierro Dr Peterkin has compiled the following parameters that are used as guidelines to the style of wines that are produced: Drinkability, overall flavor, complexity, depth and subtlety of flavor, balance and elegance. Dr Peterkin would like to produce wines that are drinkable at three months of age that will also age gracefully for fifty years. The Margaret River district now produces wines of international stature and Dr Peterkin hopes that Pierro plays part in its continued success. The Pierro cellars are situated on Caves Rd 20 km south of Yallingup.
