Winemaker - Tim Burvill
Barossa Babe is now an important member of the Rockbare family, named in honour of this classic region where the fruit is sourced. Why is Barossa Valley Shiraz so special? There is Syrah and Shiraz … and there is Barossa Shiraz. While Shiraz was the mainstay of the Australian wine industry for most of its first century, in the Barossa the variety has always had a special mystique. One of the only premium international viticulutral areas not ravaged by phylloxera in the 1800’s, the Barossa remains as a ‘living museum’of the worlds oldest shiraz vineyards. Some of these gnarled and twisted old vines date back to the first days of Barossa settlement in the 1840’s when German and English pioneers planted their treasured cuttings bought with them from Europe. Today, some Barossa vignerons are the sixth generation custodians of these old dry grown vines. Barossa Shiraz has become a unique Australian wine style - in fact, the region claims to own the word. Dark in colour, rich and full-bodied, with intensely concentrated fruit flavour often mellowed by oak maturation, these wines are an international success story.
“Like most winemakers, I know that the quality of the wine in the glass is decided by the quality of the fruit in the vineyard. For Barossa Babe, I only use grapes from old vines, not 20 or 30 years old, I’m talking seriously old, perhaps some of the oldest vines in Australia, Up to 140 years old in fact. So, why Barossa Babe? Well, this wine has been my secret project. How could I turn my back on such brilliant old Barossa vines – the opportunity was irresistible! I’m thrilled to introduce to you my ‘Barossa Babe’” - Tim Burvill
