Winemaker - Paul Atwood
In 1974 the Horgan family, after some advice from renowned American Winemaker Robert Mondavi, set about transforming their estate from a cattle farm into a winery. A lengthy five year process of planting a nursery, followed by the vineyards being deep-ploughed, deep-ripped, emptied of stone, planned, pegged into individual rows, re-ploughed, measured, marked and eventually planted by hand was exhaustively completed by the family accumulating in the successful cellaring of the first trial vintage in 1978.
Leeuwin Estate is one of the five founding wineries in the Margaret River region, and boasts one of the most modern wineries in the Southern Hemisphere. The Horgan family believe that winemaking however, is an art as well as a science and it is here where the skills of the viticulturalist and winemaker are carefully combined with technologically advanced equipment to produce the wines that have been so highly acclaimed all around the world.
Whilst housing modern functional equipment, the Leeuwin winery retains aesthetic beauty, overlooking a meadow surrounded by a forest of majestic Karri trees. Master architects have created a highly original and uniquely Australian structure that blends harmoniously with its natural environment.
Leeuwin Estate, still ran by the Horgan Family, has earned an international reputation as the producer of some of Australia's finest wines with the emphasis of the winery remaining on quality rather than quantity. Situated within the winery is Leeuwin's award wining restaurant where guests can enjoy the culinary delights of the region whilst sampling current and past releases of Leeuwin wines. The painting from Leeuwin's prestigious Art Series range adorn the restaurant walls.
